Due to all of the unknowns
surrounding the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Portage Public Schools Trustees have
decided that now is not the time to ask voters to approve a bond to replace
five elementary schools in Portage. PPS will not place a $155 million bond
question on the ballot during the August 2020 election.
The Elementary Community Survey showed that more than half of the respondents felt that some PPS facilities are in need of improvement, and nearly 98% said elementary schools are in the most need of improvement.
The survey was presented at a special meeting on April 27, 2020. School Board President Randy VanAntwerp says “We appreciate the community’s understanding of the need for new elementary
facilities, however we feel our focus right now should be on the immediate needs of our students, their families and our staff. We are committed to revisiting the plans, taking into consideration the input received through the survey, and adjusting them as we know more about the economic and other issues our schools and families will be facing as we move past COVID-19.”
